SACRAMENTO — A record number of entries — close to 300 — were submitted for this year’s California Ethnic Media Awards, covering print, broadcast, English and in-language outlets across California. “How do you choose the best from the best?” remarked one judge.
Together, the submissions reveal the passion of ethnic media journalists to tell the stories, amplify the perspectives of and advocate for their communities despite shrinking news rooms and limited resources.
The 26 judges, who were hand-picked for their cultural and in-language fluency, ranged from professors of journalism to writers, editors, researchers and policy makers from across the state.
“Original,” “extremely unique,” “a critical examination,” “comprehensive,” “nuanced reporting,” “intimate coverage,” “strong perspective,” “sensitively reported,” are some of the comments that the judges wrote in their evaluations.
