California Governor Gavin Newsom
The following is the approved statement from Governor Gavin Newsom:
“Today, the State of California pays tribute to all those who sacrificed during the Korean War, which began on this day 70 years ago. This conflict engaged dozens of nations and took the lives of millions of people, including more than 36,500 Americans. While sometimes called “the forgotten war,” the legacy of the Korean War is palpable in the thousands of Koreans who left their homeland to come to America, and in those Americans and their families who served and sacrificed in battle. In fact, the Korean War never officially ended, although an armistice was signed on July 27, 1953.”
In remembering the Korean War, we mourn those who perished to save a country from tyranny, and we pay tribute to those who forged a new life in America. Close to half a million Korean Americans call California home, and we are a stronger and more vibrant state because of their contributions. We also cherish the bonds of friendship and partnership with South Korea that this community has helped us forge.”
Let us never forget the “forgotten war” and commemorate this historic milestone.”
