Combating Hate With Love, Hopes and Dreams

“Love, hopes, and dreams” spontaneously became a theme for the March 14 gathering of nearly 30 representatives from ethnic media and community service organizations in the Inland Empire region.

The majority of participants met in downtown San Bernardino and a smaller number participated simultaneously over Zoom.

Kim Anthony of Inland Valley News described an exercise in which each student in a San Bernardino elementary class was given a potato to care for. “The students saw their potatoes as living persons and protected them with care,” she said.

“We were surprised to see the students became attached to their potatoes because they saw them as themselves and wanted to surround themselves with love, hopes, and dreams,” said Anthony.

Facilitated by Ethnic Media Services, Orange County Asian Pacific Islander Community Alliance — OCAPICA — and California Black Media, the convening allowed media publishers, reporters and direct service providers to get to know each other through sharing of information about their organizations’ programs and services, as well as challenges and successes with the goal of forming collaborations on the grounds in their areas to combat hate.

EMS’ Stop The Hate initiative is made possible with funding from the California State Library in partnership with the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs.
